BBC Earth had become synonymous with some of the most ambitious natural history programming ever made. But as the brand evolved across platforms, formats and audiences, its visual identity needed to evolve with it.
The opportunity was to create a more distinctive and flexible expression for a global content brand, one that could celebrate the extraordinary breadth of BBC Earth’s programming while giving the brand a consistent visual language across every touchpoint.
The power of BBC Earth has always been its ability to take audiences somewhere they couldn't otherwise go, from the depths of the ocean to the furthest reaches of space.
Rather than competing with the spectacular imagery at the heart of its programming, the refreshed brand was designed to frame it, creating a visual system that puts the content and sense of discovery first.
The brand device became a window, a portal into the extraordinary worlds captured by BBC Earth. It could reveal an intimate moment in nature, an expansive landscape or an entirely unexpected view of our planet.
Window to the World became the central creative idea, giving the brand a simple but powerful way to continually discover and showcase the wonder within its content.
The refresh gives BBC Earth a more distinctive and cohesive expression for its next chapter, transforming an existing visual device into a recognisable brand asset with a clear purpose.
Available in over 120 territories and countries worldwide, the identity needed to work seamlessly across markets, formats and applications, from broadcast and digital screens to billboards, print and single-colour merchandise.
By putting the Window to the World at the heart of the identity, BBC Earth can continually showcase the scale, beauty and wonder of its content through a simple, flexible system that is as immersive and expansive as the world it explores.
